Thu 3rd Oct 2019 : Wonderful Woodland Walk for Year 4
What a wonderful autumnal walk our Year 4's had yesterday!
Enjoying the glorious early October sunshine, their woodland ramble superbly exemplified the benefits of being outdoors.
Our beautiful local woods, Hargate Forest, is a wonderful space where the children are free to explore, make noise, run, skip and roll or simply quietly contemplate the clouds floating by.
The experience was rich with amazing self-learning opportunities for the children - from carefully judging the distance required to jump a muddy puddle, to considering why a bug hotel is named a ‘hotel’ rather than a den, to making beautiful bouquets of ferns, leaves and heathers.
The children hypothesized, problem solved and questioned; all super higher-order thinking skills necessary for later success.
Year 4 teacher Mrs Victoria Lake said: "Aside from the benefits to the individual, collectively we all understand that nature and Hargate Forest is shared by all of us and is precious. The children, as our future planet Earth protectors, need to connect with the natural world at a young age to begin to love it and then wish to protect and care for it as adults."
The children will be recapturing the essence of their walk in the classroom to feel, think and act as the main character in their class book Jemmy Button, creating poetry using their journey sticks, photographs and memories.
