Wed 3rd Jul 2019 : Pupils Learn Important Life Skills in Topical Debate
Our pupils had the fantastic opportunity of taking part in a live inter-house debating competition today.
Competing in our three houses, Chalybeate, Thackeray and Wellington, Year 6 house representatives discussed the topical subjects of recycling, car pollution and vegetarianism, in front of an audience of our pupils from Year 2- Year 6 as well as Mr Webster, Mrs Robinson and special guest parent Ms Playle who made up the judges panel.
Kicking off the debate, Year 6 Chalybeate and Wellington pupils voiced their opposing opinions on whether people should be fined for not recycling. Reps from Thackeray and Chalybeate then put their cases forward as to whether England should do away with cars and finally Wellington and Thackeray pupils debated whether 'to be serious about climate change is to give up eating meat'.
After each speaker had put their point forward the audience were able to ask questions.
The judges were very impressed with all the speakers commenting on how articulate, convincing and engaging they were. It was a difficult decision for the judges, but Thackeray was chosen as the overall winner.
The debate was an excellent opportunity for our pupils to experience public speaking, learning how to talk confidently and calmly and to articulately argue their case in front of an audience. Definitely an important skill for life!
