Tue 25th Jun 2019 : Linguistic Lesson in Storytelling for Year 2
“A mouse took a stroll through the deep dark wood. A fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good...”
Class 2M have been developing their linguistic skills by learning the story of The Gruffalo using a creative approach inspired by the educational trainer and writer Pie Corbett.
The class have been using elements of Corbett's 'Talk for Writing' approach to learn how to retell, and subsequently rewrite, a story.
The children created story maps of Julia Donaldson's classic tale The Gruffalo and then came up with a series of actions for each stage of their maps. By helping children speak the language of the story in an engaging way before they attempt to write this approach builds confidence and linguistic ability enabling them to craft their own writing.
Our Year 2 literary enthusiasts were able to then confidently re-tell the story without any peeking at the story (we were very impressed with their performance - see our social media pages for the video!). They then had a go at re-writing The Gruffalo themselves, which they did very successfully.
