Tue 6th Nov 2018 : Cardboard Engineering Challenge for Year 4
Year 4 pupils had a fast, furious and fun introduction to the world of engineering and technology this week.
The children took part in a 'MakeDo Challenge' led by an external expert from the Medway Education Business Partnership. Working in teams, the students were set the task of designing a vehicle for 'Sally the Bear'.
After a presentation and discussion about technology and engineering, followed by an introduction to the MakeDo kit the children then began planning and making drawings of their designs before starting on their 'builds'.
The Year 4s used simple, safe tools, including saws, nuts and bolts, screws and hinges to build their creative cardboard constructions.
Once their vehicles were complete the groups gave presentations to the rest of the year group, Mr Webster, Mrs Wilson and the external expert, describing the features of their wonderful designs which included spaceships, planes and camper-vans.
The winning construction was a hovercraft which was built as an exact prototype of the group's original designs. The team who created this model will join the county final where they will present their fantastic design and construction.
A huge well done to all our Year 4 pupils who embraced the challenge with much enthusiasm, creativity and determination. Enormous thanks also for all the very generous donations of cardboard - we had an incredible amount!
