Thu 10th May 2018 : 'Eggs-tra' Special New Fluffy Friends
There has been much 'eggs-citement' this week with the arrival of our Living Eggs Project! The 10 fertilised eggs were delivered on Tuesday and placed in an incubator in their home for the following ten days - Mr Agnew's classroom.
It didn't take long for the chicks to start hatching with the first four emerging on Wednesday and the next four following their brothers and sisters today. There are two more still to hatch - Reception class have decided it must be because they are a "bit tired".
Children from all year groups have found it absolutely fascinating watching the stages of hatching. They will have lots of opportunities to continue to observe the chicks as they develop and grow. The children have been learning about embryo development, the different stages in the life cycle of a hen, how to care for them and how to tell the difference between a male and a female.
The Living Eggs incubators are specially designed for classroom hatching, with an electronic thermostat which ensures accurate temperature control. The chicks are also supplied with a 'brooder box' complete with heat light, bedding, feed and waterer.
When the eggs have all hatched the children will be voting on names for the chicks. I wonder if they'll come up with anything more 'eggs-traordinary' (sorry!) than our favourite from last year - Egg Sheeran!
